Basic Guidelines for Moving with Pets
If you have pets, you
already know that they require special care
during unusual circumstances, and this is
especially true when considering the circumstances
of a move. With as much work and planning
you have ahead of you for simply moving yourself
and your family, it may seem overwhelming
to consider the special arrangements you’ll
need to make for your pets. But by following
the simple suggestions provided in our guidelines
for moving with pets, you and your pets will
be able to complete the moving process easily
and without any unnecessary complications.
Some pets can become extremely frightened
by travel, and you’ll probably already
be aware of it if your pet falls into this
category. Have your pets checked at the veterinarian
before moving; it may be recommended that
your animal receive a calming or sedating
medication to keep them from becoming overly
agitated during the moving process.
Whether flying or traveling by car, pets
need to be properly prepared for the move.
Under no circumstances can pets be transported
on a moving van or truck with the rest of
your possessions, so take care to ensure
that you will have the proper space in your
car or make flight arrangements that will
include your pet.
Prior to your move, obtain the state and
local regulations for pets in your new community.
Depending on the number and type of animals
you have, you may be required to make some
special accommodations for your pets.
Upon arrival at your new home, remember
that there will be a lot of activity going
on. Added to this is the fact that your pets
will find themselves in a new and strange
environment. Because of these circumstances,
you will need to make special arrangements
for tending to your pets in the first days
at your new residence. Keep your pets leashed
at all times during the move, as the confusion
could cause them to run off. If you cannot
devote the care and attention your pets need
during this busy time, consider hiring a
pet care service to “baby sit” your
animals for at least a few days.
