Moving to Alabama
Alabama has no official state nickname, but is called "The Heart of Dixie," "The Cotton State," and "The Yellowhammer State." The yellowhammer, also known as the Flicker, is a type of woodpecker. Rumor has it that the governor at the time had one as a pet and that is why he declared the Yellowhammer as the State Bird. Alabama enjoys year-round mild conditions. The average temperature is near 80° in summer, sometimes highs reach the mid 90s. The appeal is also a very pleasant climate with the temperature above 45° in winter.
Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. Alabama ranks 30th among states in size, with an area of 52,423 square miles.
