Moving to Virginia
There is a wealth of history in the commonwealth of Virginia, named for Queen Elizabeth I of England who was known as the Virgin Queen. Jamestown, the first of the original thirteen colonies, was founded for the purpose of silk cultivation, to be traded with the Court of King James. Jamestown was the first English settlement in the U.S. and the first capital of Virginia.
Virginia became the 10th state on June 25, 1788. With an area of 42,769 square miles, it is the 35th largest state in the US. Virginia’s population as of 2000 was just over 7 million people so it ranks as the 12th most populous state. Major industries are farming (tobacco, peanuts, corn, sweet potatoes, poultry, ham), tourism, US Navy warships, mining (coal), lumber (for paper and furniture), and government workers. About one-fourth of the state’s workers work for Uncle Sam.
