Moving to Texas
Texas was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845. It is the only state to have the flags of six different nations fly over it: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States. Texas is a legend, and it is usually true that "everything is bigger in Texas." Of the nation's ten largest cities, three are in Texas, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. The origin of the name Texas comes from the Caddo Indians of eastern Texas who called their group of tribes the Tejas," meaning "those who are friends." Texas is a wealth of history, beauty, and culture, and certainly a land where you will be among friends.
Texas became the 28th state on December 29, 1845. With a land area of 268,601 square miles, Texas is the second largest state in the US. Only Alaska is bigger. With a population of over 20 million people, Texas is also the second most populous state in the nation. Only California can top it. Major industries are petroleum and natural gas, farming (cotton, livestock), steel, banking, insurance, and tourism.
Now that you are moving to the Lone Star State, impress your fiends and family with your big knowledge of Texas:
State Capital is Austin.
Largest City is Houston.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president, was born in Denison in 1890.
Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th president, was born near Johnson City in 1908.

Rodeo is the official state sport, though high school football is more popular.
State Song - "Texas, Our Texas."

The Battle of the Alamo, lasting nearly two weeks, ended on March 6, 1836, with the deaths of all its defenders - about 190. The Mexican army numbered 4,000-5,000 during its final charge.
There were more than 70 World War II prisoner-of-war camps in Texas, more than any other state. Primarily the camps housed German soldiers, but also held Italian and Japanese prisoners.
The official dish of Texas is chili.
There are more than 70,000 miles of highways in the state of Texas.
Texas boasts the largest of all the state capitol buildings, constructed of 15,000 carloads of pink granite.
The Dallas/Fort Worth airport is larger than New York City’s Manhattan Island.
The world’s largest parking lot is located at DFW Airport.
One thing is not bigger in Texas: the smallest Catholic church in the world still in operation claims to be in Warrenton. Measuring 12 feet by 15 feet, the church seats 15 and is only open once a year.
Today’s population of people in Texas only slightly outnumbers its 15 million cattle.
State Mammal is the Texas Longhorn.
President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas in 1963.
