New Jersey is also a leading technology and industrial state and the largest chemical producer when pharmaceuticals are included. With a population in excess of 8 million people packed into only 8,700 square miles, New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the U.S. NJ ranks 47th in size of the fifty states and tenth in population.
