Moving to Oklahoma
Originally, the state of Oklahoma was set aside for the exclusive use of the Indians and was called Indian Territory. The name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words "okla," meaning people, and "homa," meaning red, which translates to land of the red people. In 1889, the land was opened to settlers in what became known as the "Oklahoma Land Rush." On opening day, April 22, 1889, 50,000 people swarmed into the area. Those who tried to beat the noon starting gun were called Sooners, and the state's nickname was born.
Oklahoma became the 46th state on November 16, 1907. With an area of 69,903 square miles, Oklahoma is the 20th largest state in the USA. As of 2000, the population was approximately 3.5 million people, making it the 27th most populous state. Major industries are farming (wheat, cattle), oil, and natural gas. The billionaire J. Paul Getty began his oil empire in Tulsa. This is oil country. In Oklahoma City, there is an operating oil well on the state capitol grounds called Capitol Site No. 1.
